Up in the air! The Queen is hiring a helicopter pilot

By Heather Cichowski

If you're a helicopter pilot looking for your next adventure, you could be working for the Queen! The Royal Household currently has a job vacancy for one.

According to its official website, the pilot position is a permanent, full-time role based in Odiham, a small, picturesque village in England in the Hart district of Hampshire.

The job posting falls under the Privy Purse and Treasurer’s Office department, and the pilot will be part of The Queen’s Helicopter Flight (TQHF). The chosen candidate will undertake travel across the UK and overnight, as necessary, so flexibility is important.

The job might not be based at Buckingham Palace, but it does allow the successful candidate to enjoy life in the country. Furthermore, the vacancy offers a "competitive" salary, plus benefits. Sorry, curious royals fans, but no exact remuneration figure has been specified.

The Queen’s Helicopter Flight is comprised of a small team of pilots and ground support. The new hire will be responsible for providing "the highest standard of helicopter service to Members of the Royal Family on official engagements." The successful candidate will be operating a Sikorsky S76 C++ helicopter in the role of Co-Pilot or Pilot in Command. There will also be administrative duties involved.

Needless to say, extensive piloting experience is required. The pilot vacancy lists several technical qualifications including an ATPL (H) and a Class 1 medical and a CPL (H) with Instrument Rating along with the ability to plan accurate flights, have good communication skills and be able to think proactively.

Those who are interested and have the experience have until March 1 to apply for the position!

There is always a fascination about what kinds of jobs people can have within the Royal Household. Recently, the Queen was hiring a sous chef for Buckingham Palace. The full-time, permanent position was based at the palace, but involved travel to other royal residences. The candidate even had the option of live-in accommodation!

One of her Majesty's most memorable flying-related adventures was when she stunned royals fans by appearing in a mini James Bond movie directed by Danny Boyle that was played during the opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

In the iconic video, Bond ( Daniel Craig) goes to Buckingham Palace to pick up the Queen. She then "parachutes" into the Olympics venue with 007. Of course, it wasn’t actually the Queen and Daniel in the clip, but stunt actors. But it remains a delight!
