Listen to this: New singles from Selena Gomez and Bebe Rexha

By Nicholas Jennings

Pop music thrives on samples. Think of some of the biggest hits in recent years. More than likely, the melodic, rhythmic or lyrical hooks in those hits came from other songs. Puff Daddy and Faith Evans borrowed from the Police smash “Every Breath You Take” for their hit “I’ll Be Missing You.” Rihanna used New Order’s “Blue Monday” in her “Shut Up and Drive.” And Mariah Carey lifted Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love” for her chart-topper “Fantasy.” Two of these week’s hottest new tracks come from pop starlets who have famous samples at the core of their songs.

Selena Gomez

“Bad Liar”

With the pulsing bassline from Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer,” Selena coos a killer track of her own that some have speculated is about her boyfriend, Canadian r&b star The Weeknd. The vocals, with lyrics about “feelings on fire,” are Selena’s most intimate to date, making the “It Ain’t Me” artist’s singing sound like pillow talk.

The 24-year-old star, who’s the Queen of Instagram with over 110 million followers, took to her favourite social media platform to post a clip of her video for “Bad Liar” that looks every bit as intimate as her vocal sounds.

Bebe Rexha

“The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody)” feat. Lil Wayne

“I’m sorry I’m not the most pretty, I’ll never ever sing like Whitney,” Bebe sings on her new single, which cleverly interpolates Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” Born Bleta “Bebe” Rexha (Bleta means “honey bee” in Albanian), Bebe uses the title phrase of Whitney’s hit as the chorus for her feel-good anthem.
