Miley Cyrus to host 2015 Video Music Awards

By Oleena Mak

After stealing the show for two years running, Miley Cyrus will finally have the stage all to herself as the host of the 2015 VMAs, airing live on Aug. 30. And the pop star, who scooped up the Video of the Year statue last year for “Wrecking Ball,” couldn't be more excited.

Taking to Instagram to announce the news on Monday (July 21), Miley posed in a green alien costume with the caption, “F*** yeah VMAs!!!!!”. The split-screen image shows the 22-year-old wearing two signs, one that says, “ MTV won’t let me perform” and the other stating, “So I’m hosting this year’s VMAs”.

The reference to not being allowed to perform stems back to Miley’s show-stopping, foam-fingered rendition of “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke in 2013, which caused a media frenzy on a year where ten-million viewers tuned in. It quickly became one of the most memorable performances in VMA history.

The following year, Miley took a more personal, heartfelt approach by bringing a young homeless man, Jesse Helt, as her date and having him accept the award for Video of Year on her behalf and that of the millions of runaway homeless teens.

The outspoken performer is no stranger to award shows and speaking out. Earlier this year, as the guest of honour at amfAR’s sixth annual Inspiration Gala, Miley gave an inspiring, emotional acceptance speech on fighting to find a cure for HIV and AIDS.

The “We Can’t Stop” singer will be the first person to host the boisterous awards show since Kevn Hart in 2012, as organizers have shunned MCs for the past two years. And perhaps this will be the first red-carpet appearance for Miley and her new girlfriend, Stella Maxwell. One thing is for sure: the 2015 VMAs are sure to be memorable.
