The best new music of the week: Butch Walker, Kanye West, George Ezra and more

By Nicholas Jennings

As music columnist for, each week I’ll bring you my selections for the best and most notable new music, albums you’re going to want to add to your collection plus a five-song playlist to try out. Happy listening!

Butch WalkerAfraid of Ghosts
He’s produced artists like Keith Urban and Taylor Swift, as well as his own previous albums. For his seventh release, Butch turned the production reins over to Ryan Adams and enlisted Johnny Depp to play a little guitar. The result? An excellent collection of country-folk-pop that showcases Butch’s skills as a songwriter, especially on the Springsteen-like “21+,” the swoon-worthy “Chrissie Hynde” and the chiming “I Love You,” which draws from Peter Gabriel’s anthem “Solsbury Hill.”

George EzraWanted on Voyage
Like a cross between Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, this 20-year-old Brit bellows out acoustic anthems like “Budapest” and “Barcelona,” inspired by his trip around Europe.

Rhiannon GiddensTomorrow is My Turn
Looking for a fresh voice that can give old songs new life? Try the soulful sounds of the lead singer from the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Father John MistyI Love You, Honeybear
The latest from the former Fleet Foxes drummer is collection of love songs to his wife, steeped in sounds as diverse as ragtime jazz, orchestral strings and mariachi music.

Kanye West, Rihanna, Paul McCartney – “FourFiveSeconds” An unlikely partnership and a musical departure for Ri and Kanye, who trade verses (sung, not rapped) on this sweet ’n’ slow acoustic jam about getting a little wild.
