Fans have gotten their first glimpse of Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman as Princess Margaret and the Queen on the set of The Crown, and its seems they could be shooting the day of Winston Churchill's funeral. Playing the very close royal sisters in the popular series' third season, the pair are clad in all black as they walk arm in arm on the set in Wincester on Monday (Sept. 17). And they seem to be getting on swimmingly! Though the scene may be a somber one, the actresses were happily chatting and laughing when the cameras stopped rolling.
The former British prime minister's funeral took place in January of 1965, and Winston played a big role in the first two seasons of the series (as played by John Lithgow). Since the next two seasons, featuring an all-new cast, take place between 1964 and 1976, the timing is right for Mr. Churchill's passing - and the actresses seem to be wearing almost exact replicas of the looks the Queen and Princess Margaret wore on that day. The Queen's three-strand pearls and handbag are identical!
At the 2017 Emmys, winner John Lithgow praised the man whose shoes he filled on the beloved Netflix series. “The Crown keeps on giving and this is just the last of its gifts,” he said, thanking the cast and crew, “but most of all I have to thank Winston Churchill. In these crazy times, his life, even as an old man, reminds us what courage and leadership in government really looks like.”
The leader was so well respected, in fact, that even Her Majesty gave his family the honour of arriving at his funeral after the monarch, breaking royal protocol in the process. "It is absolutely exceptional if not unique for the Queen to grant precedence to anyone," Winston's grandson Nicolas Soames said in a documentary titled Elizabeth: Our Queen. "For her to arrive before the coffin and before my grandfather was a beautiful and very touching gesture."
The series is shooting seasons three and four back-to-back, according to showrunner Peter Morgan, who revealed the news at a BAFTA Masterclass. Filming began this summer, so new episodes should premiere in 2019, though fans are still on the edge of their seats for a release date!
