Meryl Streep is joining the cast of 'Big Little Lies' for season 2

Big Little Lies may have ruled the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, but the Oscars belong to one actress and one actress alone: Meryl Streep. As the icon received her 21st nomination for her role in The Post, fans were brimming with excitement, but nothing could have prepared them for the news that came today (Jan. 24) - the iconic actress is joining Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and more on the beloved HBO drama. Cue the internet meltdown!

Meryl is taking on the role of mother to Alexander Skarsgard's character. The actor, 41, has won numerous awards for his performance as Perry Wright, abusive husband of Nicole Kidman's Celeste Wright. Meryl's Mary Louise Wright comes to Monterey on a hunt for answers following a shocking event at the end of the first season, putting her grandchildren's wellbeing top of mind.

Creator David E. Kelley previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the 68-year-old actress and Tom Hanks would be his top choices for additions to the cast, so he's surely over the moon. With her inimitable gravitas and ability to tackle any role, Meryl is any showrunner's dream.

To date, Big Little Lies has scooped up four Golden Globes, eight Emmys and two SAG Awards, garnering many accolades for its lead and supporting actors. Meryl has an Emmy to her name for her work in HBO's Angels In America, but her latest foray onto the small screen is sure to be her biggest TV role to date. No word of a lie, we could not be more excited for season two!
