Dan and Eugene Levy on fan reactions to ‘Schitt’s Creek’: ‘It’s all been really, really positive’

When Canadian father-son duo Dan and Eugene Levy came up with the idea for Schitt’s Creek more than two years ago, they had no idea that it would become an instant hit with fans. It seems viewers can’t get enough of the hilarious riches-to-rags story, which follows a billionaire family’s fall from financial grace.

Speaking to Hello! Canada’s Alison Eastwood and City’s Brad Smith at the Canadian Screen Awards – their first time ever attending the CSAs! – Dan excitedly described what the response has been like so far.

“Fortunately, Twitter gives you an instant reaction to what people are watching and its all been really, really positive, so that’s all we could ask for,” he said.

“The response is very, very strong,” added dad Eugene. “It’s so gratifying to know that people are taking to the show. It really makes us feel fantastic.”

Critics, too, have praised the sitcom, calling it “one of the best CBC comedies in years” (Toronto Star) and “the funniest Canadian show currently on the air” (National Post).

Also starring SCTV alum Catherine O’Hara as Eugene's soap opera-star wife, the series – which was recently picked up in the United States – follows a billionaire family who, after finding themselves suddenly broke, are forced to unglamorously relocate to the aptly named rural town of Schitt’s Creek.

“I had this idea for a show about a family that plays on this cultural awareness we have of what it’s like to live with a lot of money,” 31-year-old Dan told Hello! during an exclusive shoot with his dad in Toronto in January. “You know, you have the Kardashians on TV. I thought, if you flip that on its head, what would that be?”

So, will Schitt's Creek garner a CSA nomination next year? Only time will tell, but for now, Dan and Eugene are living in the moment.

“It’s surreal. We’ve been working on this for two-and-a half years, so for it to be on TV and us being here [at the Canadian Screen Awards]… it’s a very surreal experience,” said Dan.
