Meghan Markle didn't wear tights to 'Hamilton' and here's what that means

By Clare Douglas

From spending Christmas with the Queen as a royal fiancée to starting her walk down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel solo, Meghan Markle is no stranger to breaking royal traditions. And while the same is true when it comes to many pieces in her wardrobe, her choice in pantyhose, or lack thereof, has sparked a debate or whether or not the 37-year-old is committing a royal faux pas. But it turns out that the nude tights rule is actually rooted more in preference than in protocol.

The Duchess of Sussex has embraced bare legs on a number of occasions, including her most recent outing with Prince Harry at a charity performance of Hamilton, where she turned heads in a chic black Judith & Charles tuxedo dress, Paul Andrew pumps and no tights. The stylish outing ignited another round of global headlines stating that she broke royal protocol, but according to Royal Musings blog founder Marlene Koenig, the duchess didn’t break anything. "There are no rules for royal women regarding pantyhose. While most women (royal or commoner) wear pantyhouse with suits or gowns for a good slim line, it is not required by any decree from the Queen," she explained to Harper’s Bazaar.

Meghan has worn tights at official engagements, including those attended by the Queen, but it appears that they aren’t a staple in her wardrobe as much as they are in the Duchess of Cambridge’s equally stylish closet. Kate embraced tights (mainly nude but black in fall and winter) from the moment she became a senior member of the Royal Family in 2011 and always wears them paired with a perfectly tailored coatdress. Princess Diana was a fan of hosiery, but instead of sticking with basic nude stockings, the late royal often slipped into an opaque pair that matched her ensemble.
