Céline Dion nearly rejected 'My Heart Will Go On'

Happy Birthday, Céline Dion! The Canadian megastar, who turned 52 on March 30, was famous in our country when she released "My Heart Will Go On" as a single from the Titanic soundtrack in 1997. The song catapulted her to global superstardom – which she might never have had if her late husband hadn't pushed her to record it!

On Watch What Happens Live on Nov. 18, 2019, the five-time Grammy Award winner revealed she didn't want to record the song, which James Horner had written specifically for her.

"It didn't appeal to me," she said in an interview that will likely surprise fans. "I was probably very tired that day – very tired."

At that point, she revealed, René Angélil took over, recognizing Céline's feelings would likely not stay the same and she might regret passing on the track. It is now one of the best-selling singles of all time and went on to hit number one in 20 different countries.

"My husband said, 'Let's hold on.' He talked to the writer and said, 'Let's try to make it, like, a little demo,'" she said.

Céline is known for her incredible voice, and unbelievably – and also, of course, entirely believable at the same time – that demo ended up being the version you hear on the song!

"I sang the song once and they built the orchestra around it," she said. "I never re-sang it for the recording. So the demo is the actual recording. But after that, I've sang it about three gazillion times."

This truly puts Céline in a class of very few other singers. The only other person we can think of who has been able to record a track perfectly the first time through is Alanis Morissette, who has a similar impressive vocal range. The Canadian rock star told Entertainment Weekly that she cut each song on legendary album Jagged Little Pill in just one or two takes.
