‘The Cher Show’ set to debut on Broadway in 2018

Cher will be turning back time next year, thanks to a new Broadway show! The Goddess of Pop has spent over 50 iconic years in the limelight, and now her story is finally being brought to life. The Cher Show is set to hit Broadway in fall 2018 at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York City.

Cher’s incredible rise to fame began in 1965 with the song “I Got You Babe,” which she recorded with then-husband, Sonny Bono. The husband-and-wife duo churned out hits in the 60s and 70s, but their creative partnership ended when their marriage did, in 1975. Cher went on to become an extremely successful solo artist, though, releasing chart-topping hits throughout the next three decades.

In a statement, the 71-year-old singer shared, "My life as a musical on Broadway: It seems crazy, exciting and bizarre – but that's probably how my life seems to most people.” The musical promises to be a touching look into Cher’s life, based on series of interviews conducted by playwright Rick Elice (Jersey Boys).

As Rick revealed to the New York Times, “The Cher Show is not linear, and it is entirely psychological—it takes place in her psychological closet, and in that closet is everything she’s ever been in her life—everything she has ever played, every song she’s sung, everyone she’s been married to, every pair of shoes she’s worn, every success and every failure.”

Though the cast has yet to be announced, the New York Post reported that there are three different actresses set to represent Cher throughout different points in her career, which makes sense given it spans six decades! The show—directed by Jason Moore (Avenue Q) and choreographed by Rick—will introduce the audience to the star’s career and, of course, will feature some of her biggest hits.

Back in January after a rehearsal, Cher took to Twitter to express her gratitude for the Broadway musical, "Just walked [off] the musical. I SOBBED & LAUGHED & I WAS PREPARED NOT 2 LIKE IT. AUDIENCE CLAPPED AFTER SONGS & GAVE IT STANDING OVATION."

And before heading to NYC’s Broadway, the show will make a quick premier at Chicago’s Oriental theatre on June 12 of next year.
