Diary of the Week: Douglas Coupland at Holt Renfrew and the CSA nominations

By: Amoryn Engel

When artist, writer, producer and visionary Douglas Coupland comes to town, one never knows what to expect. Guests were wowed with what they saw recently along Toronto's mink mile. Holt Renfrew partnered with the ROM and MOCCA to offer a unique cultural interaction and to “paint the town Coupland.” GUMHEAD has been described as “a gum-based, crowd-sourced, publically interactive, social-sculpture self-portrait.” Over time (and with the help of a very enthusiastic public) the work will be transformed, eventually obscuring the artist’s face and creating a unique Toronto version of the piece. Graffiti at its best!

Hollywood north came alive this past week as bright lights were on hand to hear the nominations for the Canadian Screen Awards, which will take place in March at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. Comedic genius Andrea Martin was centre stage at the buzzy event and will host the awards show, which promises to be the grand finale at the end of Canadian Screen Week, celebrating all things big screen, small screen and digital!
