See Duchess Meghan’s handwritten thank-you note to a London bakery

By Sarah Walker

It appears the Duchess of Sussex still enjoys writing a good thank-you letter and putting her calligraphy skills to use!

The 37-year-old recently penned a note to Luminary Bakery in London, a social organization she included in the special edition of British Vogue she recently guest edited.

“When I knew I would be secretly guest editing the September issue of British Vogue, including Luminary Bakery was non-negotiable,” Meghan wrote on her monogrammed stationery. “The work you do, what you represent to the community, the spirit of the women there – you all embody what it means to be ‘force for change.’ Thank you for being a part of this special project.”

The card was addressed to Alice Williams, the all-female bakery’s co-owner, and the duchess signed it very simply, writing, “Meghan.”

According to People, Alice’s charity has helped transform the lives of 56 disadvantaged women since opening in 2014, many of whom were victims of sex trafficking and violence.

The former-Suits star has been a skilled calligrapher since picking up the hobby in high school, she told Esquire.

“I went to an all-girls Catholic school for like six years during the time when kids actually had handwriting class,” she said. “I’ve always had a propensity for getting the cursive down pretty well.”

Before making it big, Meghan even turned the hobby into a side hustle by creating wedding invitations for celebrities (such as Paula Patton and Robin Thicke) and writing correspondence for designers (such as Dolce & Gabbana).

“I would sit there with a little white tube sock on my hand so no hand oils got on the card, trying to pay my bills while auditioning… [it] was my pseudo-waitressing job… I didn’t wait tables. I did calligraphy,” she noted to Esquire. “I’m glad that in the land of no one seeming to appreciate a handwritten note anymore that I can try to keep that alive.”
