Happy birthday, Prince Charles! In anticipation of the future king’s milestone 70th year, Clarence House has released two gorgeous portraits of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall surrounded by their family: the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with their three children and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The delightfully casual pictures taken in the gardens of Prince Charles and Camilla’s home this past September beautifully illustrates the colour-coordinated family’s close bond.
The photos were taken by esteemed royal photographer Chris Jackson, who shared his excitement at being the man behind the lens. “I was delighted to have been asked to take these portraits of The Prince of Wales surrounded by his family to celebrate the important milestone of his 70 th Birthday,” says Chris, who is expecting his first child with Kate’s stylist Natasha Archer. “It was particularly special to capture such an informal and relaxed family portrait over a fun afternoon in the gardens of Clarence House.”
While the first snap was beautifully posed, all members showing off their megawatt smiles wearing blue and white ensembles, the second portrait is particularly endearing for their fans! The Duchess of Cornwallcan be seen cuddling up to Princess Charlotte, pointing at something in the distance, which Duchess Meghanand Prince Georgeare both doubled over with laughter. The five-year-old prince sits happily on his grandfather’s lap. Behind them, Duchess Kate beams as she holds six-month-old Prince Louis, while Prince William and Prince Harry look happy as can be between their beautiful wives.
It’s such a treat for royal watchers to see beyond the Royal Family’s public persona, and they had another opportunity while watching the recently released BBC documentary celebrating the future monarch’s life, Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70. Though Prince Charles is a busy man, he makes as much time as he can for his grandchildren – and he takes his role as a grandpa very seriously. He showed his big heart by revealing a special tribute to Prince George while filming at his Scottish home, Birkhall. Motioning to the planted trees, he said: "This is George's wood. As I get older, all I really long for is to plant trees. I hope it will be quite amusing for George, as they grow up, and he grows up."
On Wednesday (Nov. 14), the celebrations marking the Prince of Wales’ milestone birthday will culminate in a glittering gala at Buckingham Palace, hosted by his mother, the Queen, and attended by the Sussexes and Cambridges as well as other members of the British Royal Family. The reception and dinner will also see royalty from throughout Europe descend on London to toast the future king, including Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, and King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium.
