Only a few months into 2020 and it’s already shaping up to be an eventful year for Katy Perry. In March, the 35-year-old singer revealed news of her pregnancy during the music video for her latest single, “Never Worn White.” At the end of the video, the singer was shown cradling her baby bump in a surprise reveal. The pop star confirmed the big news on Twitter, writing, “omg so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore. Or carry around a big purse lol.”
Following the video’s premiere, the star took to Instagram Live to share a second surprise with her fans: “Not only will I be giving birth, literally, but also figuratively to something you guys have been waiting for. So let’s just call it a double whammy. It’s a two-for.” In addition to a summer due date with fiancé Orlando Bloom, Katy teased about her plans to release her hotly anticipated new album.
Shortly after her announcement, things took an unexpected turn with the COVID-19 global pandemic. Despite the unforeseen circumstances, the star has been taking it all in stride. After flying back home to the U.S. from Australia where she’d been performing, the mom-to-be hunkered down at home with her actor beau who also returned from the Czech Republic where he’d been filming his show, Carnival Row.
Since the big news, the mom-to-be has shared snippets of life during lockdown. On March 19, she posted a photo of herself on Instagram tucking into a jar of pickles. Pickles haven’t been her only pregnancy craving. During a livestream with producer/songwriter Benny Blanco in April, the American Idol judge talked about the challenges of going grocery store shopping during a pandemic and revealed other unusual pregnancy cravings. “My number one craving is avocado toast with tabasco. I’ve never been into spicy foods in my life but [they] light my mouth up right now.”
Even in pregnancy, the mom-to-be has stayed as stylish as ever. Embracing loungewear, she’s looked comfortable and chic with her blossoming baby bump. Whether she’s wearing a cute matching ensemble while out on a grocery run or a cozy sweatshirt at home, her maternity style continues to look on-point.
While the couple is keeping quiet about the details of their child’s arrival, the two did share one other important tidbit. In a sweet Instagram post, they revealed that they’re going to be having a little girl. Showing a close-up shot of Orlando’s face covered in pink frosting, the caption read, “it’s a girl.” While unconfirmed, it’s been reported that the couple has already picked out names. Their daughter’s name may be a tribute to Ann Pearl Hudson, Katy’s grandmother who passed away earlier this year at the age of 99.
Katy has also been keeping busy as a judge on American Idol, with the 18th season of the reality television competition currently underway. Since the lockdown, the show has transitioned to at-home tapings, but the star has managed to make the most of it. She donned an Easter Bunny onesie with a baby bump in tow to promote a Facebook Q&A ahead of an episode. She even dressed up as a giant hand sanitizer in another promotional video, while also reminding people to wash their hands.
In the meantime, Katy’s been gracefully dealing with changes to her schedule brought on by isolation. With the Met Gala postponed, the singer posted a photo of the outfit she would’ve worn to the annual fashion extravaganza, writing, “What would have been… #TheMetBall2020.” Known for her daring sartorial choices, this time would’ve been no different with a pink Madonna-inspired corset by Jean Paul Gaultier, perhaps also a cheeky nod to the maternity bra soon to come. More importantly, she’s had to put her wedding plans on hold. The couple had originally hoped to tie the knot in Japan this summer before the baby’s arrival, but have had to reconsider.
Even with all the ups and downs during these challenging times, Katy is keeping her spirits up, preparing for motherhood and the arrival of her little bundle of joy.
